Product Description
Enjoy the ultimate companion to a comics masterpiece, as award-winning artist Dave Gibbons gives his own account of the genesis of WATCHMEN in this dust-jacketed hardback volume, opening his vast personal archives to reveal never-published pages, original character designs, page thumbnails, sketches and much more, including posters, covers and rare portfolio art. Featuring the breathtaking design of Chip Kidd and Mike Essl, WATCHING THE WATCHMEN is both a major art book in its own right, and the definitive companion to the graphic novel that changed an industry.

Voted among Time magazine's 100 Best Novels from 1923 to the present, a perennial bestseller over the past twenty years and widely considered the greatest graphic novel of all time, WATCHMEN is a gripping, labyrinthine piece of comic art, which has earned an acclaimed place in modern literary history.

"I've had a great time, re-visiting the very beginnings of Watchmen and unearthing material I haven't set eyes on for many years. As a fan myself, this is the kind of stuff I eat up and I'm sure the many devotees of the graphic novel will do the same!" says Gibbons.

1 out of 5 stars Wanking off to he Watchmen...   November 18, 2008

Well, a bit of a disappointment here...not much light shed on the novel, but a lovely collection of first rate archival materials that gave birth to the novel. Could we have written a wee bit more? Let's not revel too much in the movie, which by all rumor is now 3 hrs. long, without any chance of a real cogent story...editors, wake up!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Glimpse into the Process   November 12, 2008

Never before had I seen that much thought and effort go into a project. It was January 1985 and I was representing DC Comics to the British talent. Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and I spent a delightful afternoon reviewing the project and Dave showed me sketches for the characters, the covers and even a marketing campaign that was as sophisticated as it was smart. It's a terrific that so much of this material was saved and is finally seeing the light of day, so Dave's wonderful efforts can be celebrated. The book is a visual treat and a terrific companion to the graphic novel.

5 out of 5 stars This is something to Watch   November 10, 2008

First of all, Dave Gibbons is a pack rat after my own heart. That he kept all of these sketches, etc. is a gift to all Watchmen fans.

And now it's in a book that the rest of us who loved the original classic can see what Dave was thinking and how he put the book together.

This book adds one more level to what is already a masterpiece. Now I want to go through the books side by side to compare things. Which will inevitably lead me to reading Watchmen again.

If you love The Watchmen. Get this book, you'll love it more.

5 out of 5 stars LOOKING INTO THE MIND OF A GREAT ARTIST   November 9, 2008

This book has everything you could want to see. Dave Gibbons must have saved every sketch, every piece of art that went into WATCHMEN. Thank goodness he kept it all these years. There can't be a better way to see all of his thought processes and all of the beautiful images as they evolved. Thank you Dave!

5 out of 5 stars DIGGING INTO THE ARTIST'S SECRET FILES   November 9, 2008

It's like going to Dave Gibbons' studio and getting to look at everything he ever did for WATCHMEN. I can't imagine a book giving you a more complete look at what it took to create a masterpiece. This book is a must buy. I will recommend it to friends.
